I plan on using several types for heating and cooking, wood will be the most abundant i think. propane for short term(just heating) coleman makes a survival cat heater it is kind of weak(800 btu's) but runs on a 1pound bottle for 27 hours and could save your rear end it costs about 25 bucks at bass pro shop and comes with a carry bag can be used in or out doors. Another thing i might use as a back up is a butane stove my wife uses for cooking Hot Pot(yuck) it lasts a good while and you can cook just about anything on it plus it is extremely portable. For my main heating and cooking wood/coal is going to be my primary wood stoves are cheap and fire pits are free Solar might come around latter once i figure it out. |

Free fire pits are a good thing, for actual cooking an heating. Propane bottles are useful for more than just providing fuel for a fire....they are also pressurized and flammable, which can be a useful combination for other purposes. _________________ -Randy |

When i was a kid i used to play with things that would either burn or go bang. I ran across using two widely know materials and combining them. With out going into details (cuz i dont want to get into trouble) i was able to create a goo (for lack of better description) about the size of an apple that burn contiunously for the better part of 12 hours. water, wind, dirt couldnt put it out....it burns rather hot and gives off alot of carbon (black smoke).
if you are interested...PM me. dont want to get the moderator and site admin into trouble.... _________________ The will to survive is the greatest asset you have. |

I would never use propane for reason I stated somewhere else. Propane is too unstable in many ELE and secondary events.
Wood will most likely be in abundance if you are far enough away from GZ (Ground Zero). I will use wood.
Something you should consider. Solar Panels. If done right can provide you with in invaluable resource... electricity. |

Solar ovens are very portable, durable, light weight, efficient and easy to use. Of course you need the sun!
Ideally, have multiple systems that are portable,... et al. A package of BIC lighters placed in various backpacks, vehicles, coat pockets etc. will be worth their weight in gold.
Depends on your particular situation, wood is quicker to start than coal, and is used faster, coal takes longer, but lasts longer. Propane, use it quick, the cylinders weight alot - I would use my stash of this up first. _________________ The 4 inches of gray matter between your ears is your primary weapon, everything else is for expediency |
