learn simple skills:
fire building-can you make a fire from scratch-prove it to yourself.
improvised shelter-can you make a shelter from scratch.
eatable plants- will it kill you or feed you?
processing game- have you ever done this?
finding medical plants- you got an itch can you make a salve?
these are some skill that can be passed down from generation to generation.
there are many others out there. |

It's amazing how much of that kind of knowledge was widely known a couple hundred years ago and especially in the last 50 years has been lost. I chuckle when I picture people with the cell phones after an event trying to call for food deliveries or something.
I've been finding small and concise reference books for a lot of this knowledge. Much of the basic survival stuff is well in hand including building anything out of anything. It's the plant eating survival and medicinal things I'm working on now. |

I suggest everyone develop your own training schedule and apply yourself to learn the skills and to acquire the reference BOOKS. While books are heavy and subject to the elements, they are much more reliable than electronic media in numerous ways. The program I suggest is comprised of four components; critical skills, common skills, a primary field of your expertise (speciality) and lastly a series of camping trips where you apply these skills on a more or less routine basis. These are those that I have developed.
Critical Skills
Mental Mind Frame
Close order drill learning to move large groups of people quickly and efficiently.
PT (running, calisthenics, marches, swimming) - get you in better condition in the hopes that you will stay alive longer
Land/Sea Navigation
Expedient shelters
Fire fighting (wildland, urban aviation) and fire building (save what we can)
Water purification, locating water
Edible plants and animals, food preparation
Close Quarter Combat skills – self defense
Marksmanship – Assault rifle, shotgun and pistol, cleaning, ammunition management, shooting fundamentals, weapons assembly/disassembly, weapons deployment
Herbology - medicinal, culinary, identification, harvesting, growing and making components ie. poultice, infusion, ointments, tinctures, etc.
Combat Medical Training - real world stuff, not "call 911"! Such as setting fractures, treatment for shock, stabilization, buddy/patient transport, litter construction, field dressing applications, splint making.
Weather predication, cloud formations, common field indicators of weather changes, barometer, temp plus humidity, etc.
Field Hygiene and sanitation
Basic mechanical maintenance and repair
Common Skills
Continuity of Government (COG) people eventually need some form of government, if SHTF you need to understand at least the rudimentary principles of government and civics.
Medical/dental diagnostics and treatment such as identification, diagnostics, immediate treatment, recovery treatment, this MUST include dental, child birth, setting bones, stitches, wound management, infection control, basic surgical procedures, drug nomenclature and interactions and dispensement.
Communications - at least CB, then HAM-packet, then HAM, field expedient radios, field expedient antenna construction, codes, ciphers
Other weapons familiarization, use and deployment
Civil engineering and infrastructure construction such as plumbing, sewers, water purification, bridge making,
Basic construction engineering using poles and rope, and other field expedient means and materials, fortification constructions, bunker construction, fighting position construction.
Security-physical, installation, perimeter, personnel
Improvised Explosive Devices (IED)
Farming and Livestock management
Combat strategy, tactics and operations
Planning, Operations, Logistics, Finances
Personnel Administration
Intelligence
Civil Affairs Operations
Training, teaching and instructing
Occupational Specialty
100-Combat Arms, 110-Human Genome procreation, 120-Demolitions, 130-Communications, 140-Civil Affairs, 150-Clerical, 160-Tactical, 170-Construction, 180-Medical, 190-Transportation, 200-Finance/Budget, 210-Restricted, 220-Weapons, 230-Strategy, 240-Intelligence, 250-Supply, 260-Cartography, 270-Administration, 280-Computers, 290-Mechanical, 300-Electricity, 310-Food Service, 320-Law Enforcement, 330-Fire Fighting, 340-Psychological Affairs, 350-Recruitment, 360-Electronics, 370-Maintenance, 380-Fluid Management, 390-Conservation, 400-Farming, 410-Science, 420-Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical, 430-Aviation, 440-Manufacturing, 450-Foreign Relations, 460-Economics, 470-Naval, 480-Reserved _________________ The 4 inches of gray matter between your ears is your primary weapon, everything else is for expediency |

These skill sets and knowledge are obviously daunting. I have been following this format for almost 5 decades, and there are a few items on these list that I am weak on.
In all reality, if SHTF ten years ago, I rated my personal survival ability quite high, now, I am at the verge of becoming a liability to others simply because of my age. But, I do have the skills, knowledge and wisdom. Qualities that many younger napalm pissers don't have.
My skill set is changing from a "doer" to a "teacher". Something everyone should consider is developing your instructor skills. Youth will have the advantage in strength, speed, health, and endurance but lack wisdom and knowledge. That is where the older war dogs come in to play.
Ninety to Ninety-five percent of the population are clueless about what this board and others like it do and talk about. Remember that! We are likely to be in the survival mode in the coming years, but we will at some point (presuming we live) will be in a much more important role of teaching, instructing and educating the younger generations how to live. Learn to instruct now! _________________ The 4 inches of gray matter between your ears is your primary weapon, everything else is for expediency |
