During major disasters and other events, we adults are placed into dire extremes – we are well aware of that, but what about the children?

Essentially during a disaster the children are terrified and they look to the adults to provide and protect them. It would be interesting to see a study done about the response adults have done that directly correlates to this – especially in the wake of Katrina et al.

Years ago, when making a packing list for emergencies we packed a bible (is a survival tome in and of itself) for times to read to the little ones. Also, coloring books, colors, pencils, some paper, and some of those traveling games designed to use in cars on trips.

Interestingly, I don’t see this subject mentioned any more. Hum?

Part of my personal list that is packed is old (circa 1911 and 1930ish) Boy and Girl Scout Field manuals that include games to play outside. It is for the grandchildren now.

Also, how is school taught after a catastrophe? IMO our children in the public sector get indoctrination at best – a poor substitute for an education. Graciously, many schools are requiring parents to teach their children at home via homework etc. This is a saving grace – at least most parents have some skill at teaching children. But do parents have the necessary principles for teaching grammar, mathematics, science, biology and other stuff.

Many on this board home school, an excellent idea, or at least expand upon the curriculum of a public school.

If you have children, get them involved in scouting. One of the best things I did.
One eagle scout, one life scout and one explorer girl scout – not bad.
